- To generate an exact calling string, select where you are calling from, where you are calling to, and optionally enter the recipient's domestic number.

Why it matters
International telecommunications follow specific exit and trunk routing rules that vary by nation. For example, callers from the US must dial 011 before the country code, while Europeans dial 00. Domestic trunk prefixes (like the initial 0 in the UK or France) must almost always be dropped when calling from abroad. This tool prevents dropped international calls and billing errors.
When to use it
Consult when placing international business calls, setting up VoIP lines, configuring customer service routing, or verifying unfamiliar area codes on caller ID.
Good to know
Emergency numbers and premium rate services are country-specific and cannot be called internationally via standard IDD prefixes.
Common questions
What is an international exit code?
An exit code (also called an International Direct Dialing or IDD prefix) signals to your telephone provider that you are placing an outgoing call outside the country. Common exit codes are 00 in the UK/Europe and 011 in North America.
Why do I have to drop the initial '0' in international phone numbers?
In many countries like the UK, Australia, France, and Germany, the initial zero is a domestic trunk code indicating a long-distance national call. When calling across international borders, the international country code replaces this domestic prefix.
Which countries share the +1 calling code?
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) uses country code +1 across the United States, Canada, and various Caribbean nations and territories (such as Jamaica, Bahamas, and Puerto Rico).
Does Italy drop the leading zero for international calls?
No! Italy (+39) is one of the rare exceptions where landline area codes require keeping the leading 0 (e.g. Rome is dialed as +39 06 XXXX XXXX).
