About this tool

How to use it

  1. Select your measurement unit system (US Customary in feet/sq ft or Metric in meters/m²).
  2. Enter the room length and width (or divide L-shaped rooms into separate rectangular sections).
  3. Choose your flooring material type to load standard box coverage figures (e.g. 24 sq ft for LVP, 20 sq ft for laminate), or type custom coverage per carton.
  4. Select your installation waste factor (10% for straight planks, 15% for diagonal layouts, 20% for herringbone patterns), pick underlayment roll size, and review exact whole cartons to purchase.

Why it matters

Flooring cannot be ordered in fractional square footage and cutting around corners, doorways, and room perimeter offsets creates unavoidable scrap. Underestimating waste leaves your project stalled mid-installation with discontinued dye lots, while overestimating wastes hundreds of dollars. This calculator computes exact net area, pattern waste, full carton rounding, and underlayment rolls.

When to use it

Use this calculator before visiting flooring suppliers or big-box hardware stores, when estimating remodeling budgets for laminate, hardwood, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP), and when determining perimeter trim footage for baseboard installation.

Good to know

Always round up to the next full carton. Keep at least one unopened box of leftover planks in climate-controlled storage after installation to allow seamless plank replacement in case of future water damage or deep scratches.

Common questions

Why do you need to add 10% to 15% extra for flooring waste?

Flooring planks must be cut at every wall perimeter, closet jog, and doorway transition. Offcuts shorter than manufacturer minimum overlap rules (typically 6 to 8 inches) cannot be used and must be discarded. Additionally, boards with manufacturing defects or damaged click-lock tongues during installation account for 2% to 3% scrap.

How much waste should I calculate for herringbone or diagonal layouts?

Herringbone and 45-degree diagonal patterns require 15% to 20% waste allowance. Because every perimeter boundary requires double-angled miter cuts, scrap generation is significantly higher than standard straight or staggered parallel plank runs.

Do I need underlayment for luxury vinyl plank (LVP)?

It depends on whether your LVP has pre-attached acoustic backing (such as IXPE or cork). If your plank already includes attached pad, adding a second foam underlayment will void the manufacturer warranty by allowing too much flex under the click-lock joints. However, concrete subfloors still require a 6-mil poly vapor barrier.

How do you calculate flooring for an L-shaped room?

Divide the L-shaped space into two distinct rectangular sections (Rectangle A and Rectangle B). Measure length and width for each, multiply to find the area of both rectangles, and add them together before applying your waste factor.

How many linear feet of baseboard trim do I need?

Calculate room perimeter by adding twice the length plus twice the width (2 × [L + W]), then add 10% for corner miter cuts. Subtract the width of doorways (usually 30 to 36 inches per door) from the total length.
