About this tool

How to use it

  1. Select your courses or type course titles, then choose the letter grade earned for each class.
  2. Set the credit hours or course units (typically 3 or 4 credits per collegiate lecture course).
  3. Select the course academic weight (Regular 4.0, Honors +0.5, or AP/IB/College +1.0).
  4. Check Include Prior Cumulative GPA to project your updated multi-semester cumulative grade point average.

Why it matters

Letter grades do not convey overall academic standing until converted into credit-weighted grade points (Quality Points). A 4-credit course affects your cumulative GPA one-third more heavily than a 3-credit course. This calculator provides instantaneous unweighted 4.00, weighted 5.00, and cumulative GPA totals.

When to use it

Use at midterm or finals week to determine required target grades for Dean's List eligibility, when applying for merit scholarships, or when projecting cumulative GPA changes prior to college admissions.

Good to know

Calculations follow standard North American 4.00 collegiate grade point scales (A/A+=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0). High school weighted scales add 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP/IB courses.

Common questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA measures academic achievement on a standard 4.00 scale regardless of course difficulty, where an A equals 4.00 in any class. Weighted GPA awards additional bonus points (typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for Advanced Placement / International Baccalaureate courses), resulting in GPAs up to 5.00.

How is semester GPA mathematically calculated?

Multiply the grade point value of each letter grade by the course credit hours to obtain Quality Points. Sum the quality points across all courses and divide by the total number of attempted credit hours: GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credits.

What GPA is required for Dean's List and Latin Honors?

Most universities require a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher (top 10–20% of class) for Dean's List honors. For Latin graduation honors, typical thresholds are Cum Laude (3.50–3.79), Magna Cum Laude (3.80–3.89), and Summa Cum Laude (3.90–4.00).

Does an A+ count as 4.33 or 4.00 in college?

At the vast majority of North American colleges and universities, an A+ is capped at 4.00, identical to an A. A small number of institutions (such as Columbia and Cornell) utilize a 4.33 scale for an A+.

How does retaking a course affect cumulative GPA?

Under standard university Grade Replacement policies, the new grade replaces the previous grade in cumulative GPA computation, though the original attempt remains visible on official transcripts. If your school uses Grade Averaging, both attempts are factored into total credits.
