⚖️ Decision Verdict: The Passphrase Advantage
Long multi-word passphrases are exponentially harder for computers to brute-force than short, complex passwords, while remaining effortlessly memorable for humans (XKCD 936 "Correct Horse Battery Staple").

About this tool
How to use it
- Select the number of words using the slider (typically 4 to 6 words).
- Choose your word separator (hyphen, space, period, or underscore).
- Select capitalization style: Title Case, lowercase, or UPPERCASE.
- Optionally check random numbers or special symbols for increased cryptographic entropy.
- Click 'Generate New Passphrase' to instantly roll a fresh CSPRNG passphrase, and 'Copy to Clipboard' for immediate use.
Why it matters
Humans struggle to memorize random 16-character gibberish strings like 'j7$kL#92mP!', leading to bad habits like writing them down on sticky notes or reusing passwords across sites. Multi-word passphrases (known as Diceware or the XKCD method) achieve superior mathematical entropy by leveraging long key length, making them practically uncrackable by modern GPU brute-force rigs while remaining effortless for human memory to recall.
When to use it
Use this tool when creating a master password for Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePass, establishing full-disk encryption (BitLocker / FileVault), generating SSH keys, or securing root server accounts.
Good to know
Cryptographic Safety: This tool uses `window.crypto.getRandomValues()` directly inside your browser. No passwords or words are ever transmitted over a network or saved to any server.
Common questions
Why are passphrases stronger than complex short passwords?
Brute-force crack time grows exponentially with length, not just character complexity. A 5-word passphrase has ~65 bits of entropy (over 36 quintillion combinations), which takes modern supercomputers centuries to crack, while a 10-character mixed password can often be broken in days.
What is Diceware?
Diceware is a cryptographic method invented by Arnold Reinhold that uses real dice rolls to pick random words from an indexed dictionary. This digital generator replaces physical dice with cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generators (CSPRNG).
How much entropy is considered secure today?
NIST Special Publication 800-63B recommends at least 64 bits of entropy for master passwords and high-value credentials, which equals approximately 5 to 6 words chosen randomly from a large dictionary.
Are generated passphrases sent to your server?
No! Everything runs 100% locally in your web browser. Nothing is logged, cached, or transmitted across the internet.
What is the best separator to use?
Hyphens (-) are the industry standard because they clearly delineate words while remaining compatible with command line tools, URLs, and mobile keyboards.
