♺ Beware "Wishcycling"
Putting non-recyclable items into the blue bin hoping they will be recycled (called wishcycling) often contaminates entire truckloads of clean cardboard and paper. When cardboard absorbs grease from unwashed food containers or pizza boxes, it cannot be pulped into recycled paper and the entire bale is sent to landfill. When in doubt, follow the rule: Clean, Dry, and Empty.
About this tool
How to use it
- Type any household product into the search bar (e.g. 'pizza box', 'shredded paper', 'foil', or 'battery').
- Filter by category chips (Plastics #1-7, Paper, Metal & Glass, Organics, or Hazardous Waste).
- Check the designated color-coded target bin (Blue Recycling, Green Compost, Gray Trash, or Special Drop-off).
- Read the item-specific preparation rule (e.g. tear off greasy lids, rinse food sauces, scrunch foil into 2-inch balls).
Why it matters
Contamination ruins recycling programs. Adding unwashed greasy cardboard or loose plastic grocery bags to curbside bins tangles optical sorting machinery and forces municipal recovery facilities to send entire multi-ton truckloads directly to landfills.
When to use it
Use this tool whenever unpacking groceries, clearing kitchen clutter, disposing of shipping deliveries, or tidying household maintenance waste.
Good to know
Complies with municipal Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) sorting standards and the American Chemistry Council Resin Identification Codes (#1 to #7).
Common questions
Can I recycle greasy pizza boxes?
Only the clean parts. Tear off the clean top lid for curbside recycling. The greasy, cheesy bottom cardboard cannot be pulped into recycled paper and must go into municipal compost or general trash.
Why can't plastic grocery bags go in the curbside recycling bin?
Plastic grocery bags and thin films (#4 LDPE) wrap tightly around the spinning gears and optical sorters at recycling plants, causing mechanical jams and plant shutdowns. Drop them off at supermarket collection bins instead.
Are takeout paper coffee cups recyclable?
No. Most disposable paper coffee cups are fused with an interior polyethylene plastic waterproofing lining that paper recycling mills cannot separate. Toss the cup in general trash, but recycle the rigid plastic lid (#5 PP) in the blue bin.
How clean do food containers need to be?
They do not need to be dishwasher-sterile, but they must be 'Empty, Clean, and Dry.' A quick water rinse to remove visible food sauces, peanut butter, or dairy residues is all that is required.
