Tile, Grout & Adhesive Materials Calculator

Calculate exactly how many tiles, boxes, bags of grout, and adhesive you need for your wall or floor tiling project.

Renovation Presets:
Recommended Materials Order
4 Boxes of Tiles • 1 Bag of Grout • 2 Bags Adhesive
Covering 5.00 m² actual surface + 10% cutting allowance (5.50 m² ordered)
Tile Quantity 62 Tiles 4 full boxes (1.44 m²/box)
Grout Required 2.5 kg 1x 5kg Bag (with spare)
Adhesive Required 24.8 kg 2x 20kg Bags
Total Surface Area 5.50 m² Includes 0.50 m² cut waste

🔧 Tiler's Golden Rule on Tile Batch Numbers

Always purchase full unopened boxes from the exact same manufacturing batch / dye lot number printed on the packaging. Ceramic and porcelain tiles fired in different kiln batches frequently exhibit subtle shade variances and minute 0.5mm size discrepancies that become starkly noticeable after grouting.

About this tool

How to use it

  1. Select your tiling application (Floor with thicker mortar bed vs Wall tiling).
  2. Enter the length and width of your room or splashback area in meters.
  3. Input your tile dimensions in millimeters (Length, Width, Thickness) and grout joint spacer width.
  4. Choose your pattern cut wastage allowance (10% straight, 15% diagonal, 18% herringbone).
  5. Review the exact ordered quantities for tile boxes, grout bags, and adhesive tubs.

Why it matters

Running out of tiles mid-project is a disaster because subsequent tile batches often carry subtle color and size variations. Conversely, over-ordering adhesive results in heavy, non-returnable wasted building bags. Exact volumetric joint formulas prevent both under- and over-purchasing.

When to use it

Use this tool before visiting the home improvement store or ordering palletized porcelain/ceramic tiles online.

Good to know

Uses the universal volumetric joint equation: kg/m² = ((L + W) / (L × W)) × Joint Width × Tile Thickness × 1.7 grout density.

Common questions

Why do I need to add 10% to 15% wastage to my tile order?

Edge cuts, corner mitres, pipe penetrations, and occasional transport breakages reduce usable tile area. Straight grid layouts require +10%, while complex diagonal or herringbone patterns require 15% to 18% extra.

How is grout weight calculated?

Grout quantity depends directly on tile size and joint depth. Smaller tiles (like subway or mosaic) have far more linear joint seams per square meter, requiring 3x to 5x more grout than large 600x600mm porcelain slabs.

How much tile adhesive do I need per square meter?

Wall tiles using a standard 6mm notched trowel require approximately 2.5–3.0 kg of adhesive per m². Heavier floor tiles using a 10mm notched trowel require approximately 4.5–5.0 kg per m².

Are my room dimensions saved online?

No. All measurements calculate locally in your browser with zero remote data collection or cloud tracking.
