Barcode Data Sources & Verification Architecture
1. GS1 Country Prefix Table: Decodes manufacturer country and member organization based on the official GS1 general specification standards (ISO/IEC 15420).
2. Mod-10 Check Digit Engine: Validates UPC-A, EAN-13, and GTIN-14 check digits using mathematical Modulo-10 checksum calculation.
3. Open Food Facts Live API: Live querying of the open-source global food & consumer goods repository (openfoodfacts.org) for real-time brand, ingredients, and packaging information.
About this tool
How to use it
- Enter any 12-digit UPC-A, 13-digit EAN-13, or GTIN barcode number into the search box.
- Verify the Mod-10 check digit math and inspect the GS1 country allocation and company prefix.
- View complete retail product specifications including manufacturer, packaging dimensions, weight, and model number.
- Generate or download a clean SVG vector barcode rendering suitable for inventory labeling or packaging review.
Why it matters
Retailers, warehouse managers, and e-commerce merchants must frequently verify product identifiers against GS1 international standards to prevent barcode collisions and shipping rejections. This tool combines check digit math, GS1 prefix decoding, and product catalog lookups into a fast client-side utility.
When to use it
Use when inspecting incoming warehouse shipments, registering new items on Amazon or Shopify, testing barcode scanner outputs, or calculating missing check digits.
Common questions
What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13 barcodes?
UPC-A (Universal Product Code) is the standard 12-digit retail barcode used primarily in North America. EAN-13 (European Article Number / International Article Number) is a 13-digit superset used worldwide. A UPC-A is equivalent to an EAN-13 with a leading zero.
How is the barcode check digit calculated?
Both UPC-A and EAN-13 use the GS1 Mod-10 algorithm. Digits in odd and even positions are alternately multiplied by 3 and 1, summed together, and subtracted from the next highest multiple of 10.
Can I calculate the check digit if I only have 11 digits?
Yes. If you enter 11 digits of a UPC-A, this tool automatically computes the exact 12th check digit and allows you to fill it with one click.
