About this tool

How to use it

  1. Enter the birth date and time in the first field.
  2. Leave the second field on 'now', or press Now to reset it, or pick a different reference date/time to calculate age as of that moment instead.
  3. Press Calculate Exact Age, or just change either field — the result updates live.
  4. Read the headline figure for a calendar-style age (years, months, days), and the row below it for the same span in flat totals (days, weeks, hours, minutes).
  5. Check the countdown strip for how many days remain until the next birthday from the reference date.

Why it matters

The 'years old' figure everyone uses in conversation hides a more exact picture — the same birthday can fall anywhere from 0 to 364 days into a year, and the flat totals (especially total days and total hours) are useful for anything that needs a real number rather than a rounded age, like calculating exact eligibility windows or just satisfying curiosity about a specific milestone (the 10,000th day, for instance).

When to use it

Useful around a birthday to see the precise breakdown rather than just the year count, when a form or eligibility check asks for age in a specific unit, or when comparing two people's or two events' exact time spans against each other.

Good to know

The years/months/days breakdown is calendar-aware — it counts actual full calendar months and years, not a fixed 30-day or 365-day approximation, so results correctly reflect real month lengths and leap years (someone born on 29 February counted against a non-leap-year date will show one day less than a full year, since 29 February didn't occur that year). All totals (days, weeks, hours, minutes) are calculated in the browser's local time zone using the two date/times entered; the tool does not know or adjust for time zone differences between a birth location and where it's being used.

Common questions

Why do the years/months/days figures not match a simple days-since-birth divided by 365?

Because they're calculated the way a birthday actually works — full elapsed calendar years, then full elapsed calendar months, then the remaining days — rather than an average-year approximation. A year is sometimes 365 days and sometimes 366 (leap years), and months range from 28 to 31 days, so a fixed-average calculation would drift out of sync with real birthdays over time.

How is a person born on 29 February handled?

Their age still counts in full calendar years measured against 29 February when it exists (leap years) or effectively 28 February/1 March in between, following the same calendar-aware logic used for every date — the tool doesn't apply any special-case rule beyond the standard calendar month/day arithmetic.

Does this account for time zones?

No — both the birth date/time and the reference date/time are treated in your browser's local time zone as entered, with no conversion applied. If you need age calculated relative to a different time zone, adjust the entered times manually before calculating.

What does 'Next birthday in' count down to?

The next occurrence of the birth month and day (at the same time of day) on or after the 'as of' date/time you've entered — if that date has already passed this year, it counts to next year's date instead. It always uses your chosen 'as of' date, not necessarily today's date.
