About this tool

How to use it

  2. For Western to Hebrew conversions, choose the date using the date picker and toggle 'After sunset' if the event takes place in the evening.
  3. For Hebrew to Gregorian conversions, pick the Hebrew day, month (including leap Adar months), and Jewish year.
  4. View the holiday calendar tab for an instant schedule of major Jewish festivals, fast days, and observances for any selected year.

Why it matters

The Hebrew calendar is a lunisolar calendar that governs Jewish religious observances, yahrzeits (memorial dates), bar/bat mitzvahs, and biblical holidays. Because days begin at sundown and years follow a 19-year Metonic leap cycle with extra Adar months, precise conversion tools are essential.

When to use it

Use this tool to calculate Hebrew birthdays, find yahrzeit memorial dates, verify bar or bat mitzvah Torah portions, plan upcoming Jewish holiday celebrations, or schedule cross-cultural events.

Common questions

Why does the Hebrew date change at sundown rather than midnight?

In Jewish tradition based on Genesis ('And there was evening and there was morning, one day'), calendar days commence at sunset (shkiah) rather than midnight. If your event occurs after sundown, enable the sunset shift checkbox.

What is an Adar I and Adar II leap year?

Because a 12-month lunar year is approximately 11 days shorter than a solar year, the Hebrew calendar adds an extra 30-day month (Adar I) during 7 years of every 19-year Metonic cycle to keep Passover aligned with the spring season.

What do the Hebrew letters represent in the date?

Hebrew numerals use the Hebrew alphabet (Gematria) where each letter represents a numeric value (e.g., Alef=1, Yud=10, Tav=400). Jewish years are traditionally written using these letter combinations.

Is this converter fully accurate for future and historical dates?

Yes. The conversion logic implements the standard mathematical and astronomical rules of the fixed Hillel II rabbinical calendar used across world Jewry since 358 CE.
